BEIJING (Sputnik) - China's newly commissioned nuclear-powered submarine, dubbed the Type 094A, is equipped with ballistic missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of 10,000 kilometres (6,200 miles) — the most powerful in the country, the South China Morning Post reported, citing a military source.

"The Type 094A is an upgraded version of the Type 094 that overcame one of the key problems – noise – by improving hydrokinetic and turbulent systems, allowing it to carry the more powerful JL-3", the source was quoted as saying on Sunday.

Before the upgrade, the submarine was capable of firing the inferior JL-2 that could only hit the northeast United States, the source said, noting that currently, it is able to cover the whole American continent.

The newspaper also reported, citing a military expert, that the new weapon would boost China's ability to retaliate after a nuclear strike.

The new nuclear submarine, showcased last week as part of the celebration to mark the 72nd anniversary of the Chinese navy, is armed with the JL-3, or Julang, submarine-launched ballistic missile, the newspaper said.

The Asian country currently has six Type 094 and Type 094A submarines, with each able to carry 16 JL-3 missiles.

    I'm sure they meant to say that the previous version could only reach the northwestern US, not northeastern, and that is if it's fired from China, not from a submarine parked off the west coast of the USA. It's about 8,000 km to reach northwestern USA from China.

    Is anyone else curious about exactly how many nuclear warheads China actually has? The western media, especially the American media, even supposed American nuclear experts and scholars, say China only has a few hundred warheads (like 300 to 400). Even the American government says China only has a few hundred warheads. But who can trust the American government? And why would they lie on this matter? Seems their estimates are way off. Is a few hundred warheads really believable? China has had nuclear weapons almost as long as any other country. They tested nuclear weapons as far back as the 1960s. So they should have almost parity in numbers with America and Russia. And here is something interesting, in the late 1990s China acquired ICBM navigation technology from an American company, with permission of the Democrat party controlled government at the time, that helped the Chinese to drastically reduce the CEP (circular error probability) of their missiles.

    The US has no clue how many submarines China really has and also no clue about how many SLBM they have. China is not openly talking about its weapons capability so all that is publishing is merely based on speculation.

    Seam, Don't think there is much chance of that happening as we seem hell bent on destruction. It's in our DNA. People dying of hunger and natural disasters all over the planet and what do we prioritise? More weapons of mass destruction. Maybe the cockroaches will make a better go of it.
