Google Is An Ungovernable Criminal Enterprise

Google Is An Ungovernable Criminal Enterprise

JANUARY 24, 2022 PRESS RELEASE

Washington, D.C. — The American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement in response to a new suit from a bipartisan coalition of four state and territorial attorneys general that challenges Google’s systematic — and illegal — surveillance of its users.

“Today’s bipartisan suit against Google is the fourth antitrust complaint in just over a year. At this point, it should be obvious that Google is an ungovernable criminal enterprise,” said Sarah Miller, Executive Director of the American Economic Liberties Project. “Surveillance is key to Google’s dominance – in advertising and across its other lines of business. This suit documents Google’s pernicious efforts to manipulate its users, and its regular use of ‘dark patterns,’ a practice the FTC has warned is illegal. Privacy is a competition issue and this suit takes important steps to protect it.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.

BPO workers stand in solidarity with Nexperia workers on strike!

BPO workers stand in solidarity with Nexperia workers on strike!

With an overwhelming victory in the strike vote held this July 29-30, the workers of Nexperia Philippines, Inc. led by NPIWU-NAFLU-KMU, displayed the decisiveness of the working class. The union filed the notice of strike last June 26 because of Nexperia Philippines, Inc.’s gross violations on the workers’ right to security of tenure as it unjustly terminated almost five hundred employees since last year for redundancy reasons due to automation in its production process. Nexperia management’s goal is to reach a 1:8 automation ratio and will thus continue to decrease its workforce to advance its economic objective of increasing ultra profits at the expense of workers’ rights and its bargained agreement with the union.

Automation is a pressing issue for Nexperia workers, BPO employees, and workers across various industries. Transnational and multinational companies consistently utilize technological advancements in production to justify replacing workers. These capitalists boldly claim that artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over because workers lack the skills to meet unrealistically high quotas.

As an article from the Business Mirror writes “…one of the several initiatives underway to get these accomplished is IBPAP’s recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) “to embed training programs designed by the IT-BPM sector into the curriculum of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for more readily employable graduates with industry-relevant skills.””

We emphasize that the true adversary of the working class is not automation or artificial intelligence, but corporate greed. It is not the technology itself that displaces workers, but the decisions of capitalists to reduce their workforce in favor of mechanized production lines. An ethical and moral approach would ensure that technological advancements enhance workers’ quality of life by streamlining production processes and freeing them from repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on quality and productivity.

This strike vote highlighted three crucial realities for Filipino workers. First, under the capitalist wage system, we are all replaceable. Second, in a country heavily dependent on imperialist economies like the US, workers must unite to fight for their democratic rights. Lastly, only through collective action can workers truly have a fighting chance when their lives, rights, jobs, and everything else are on the line.

The Nexperia workers’ strike is both right and just. The BPO Industry Employees Network, along with its chapters, member organizations, and individuals, fully supports them. We call on all BPO workers in the Philippines to stand in solidarity with Nexperia workers, particularly by unionizing our own industry. By coming together, we can take collective action to challenge the unfair systems in our country that weigh us down.###

1. Background

AWO International was founded in 1998 as a professional association for development cooperation and humanitarian action within the framework of the German welfare organization, “Arbeiterwohlfart” (AWO). It draws on the expertise and vast experience of AWO in Germany, which has been an integral part of the German welfare state since the last century.

In close cooperation with local non-governmental organizations in Central America, East Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, AWO International is working to ensure that disadvantaged people can sustainably improve their living conditions. AWO International’s Regional Office in Southeast Asia (AWO RO SEA), under the Development Cooperation program, is currently implementing a program on “Combatting Human Trafficking and Promoting Safe Migration” in the region with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It is now on its third cycle, running from 2024 until 2026. Its overall objective is to capacitate marginalized communities in rural and urban areas so that they are empowered and protected against unsafe migration and human trafficking. The program also aims to improve their well-being by increasing access to development and livelihood opportunities through self-determined and participatory processes.

Meanwhile, as part of AWO RO SEA’s Humanitarian Action (HumA) program, it implements response operations, especially in disaster events where vulnerable groups are severely affected. The specific sectors of interventions are planned for and implemented depending on the needs on the ground; the types of aid provided vary from food and non-food items like water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and emergency shelter among others. Aside from responding to disasters, AWO RO SEA also conducts measures on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM).

AWO International is committed to improving its own and its partners’ preparedness in responding to disasters. To ensure that everyone can respond and is prepared to continuously deliver their services even during disasters, AWO International provides capacity building on DRMM to its development cooperation partners. Since 2021, AWO RO SEA has conducted various trainings. In March 2022, AWO RO SEA conducted an introductory session on disaster response programming. A recommendation from the consultants was the need for training on WASH in Emergencies (technical) and Psychological First Aid (PFA) training. The latter is a valuable intervention that partner organizations can utilize, not only during disasters but also at times when they deal with their target groups – such as distressed migrant workers, trafficking victims, and others. It is a supportive response and a psychosocial intervention for people shaken by stressful events including disasters and other such traumatic events. It seeks to reduce the initial distress and foster immediate adaptive functioning and coping. Among all other response programs, most of the partner organizations are familiar with PFA but only a few have been formally trained.

Thus, AWO RO SEA plans to conduct a five-day (5-day) training on Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). It is seeking to contract into service a short-term Consultant to plan, design, and deliver the training.

Training Objectives:

By the end of the 5-day training, the participants should be able to:

  • Understand the concept of psychological and mental well-being in relation to dealing with stress and trauma in times of disasters and other similar situations.

  • Be aware of the importance of self-care when helping others and understand how to take care of oneself to prevent burnout.

Participants:

The main target participants are staff involved in programming and service delivery. The total number of participants is estimated to be at least eighteen (18) people, with two (2) staff from each of AWO RO SEA’s partner organizations and the regional office.

Harris win will lead to WWIII - WE ARE ALREADY IN WW3, UNTIL NOW IT WAS JUST "COGNITIVE", NOW IT IS WW AS USUAL.

Harris win will lead to WWIII – Trump

The US vice president is “incompetent,” and will escalate the crisis in the Middle East, her Republican rival has claimed
Harris win will lead to WWIII – Trump

Should Kamala Harris win the US presidential election, “major wars” in the Middle East and “maybe a third world war” will break out, former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump has claimed. Trump has repeatedly accused Harris and President Joe Biden of dragging the US toward a global conflict.

Speaking ahead of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, Trump vowed that the Israel/Hamas war would “work out and very quickly” if he were to return to the White House.

“If we don’t, you’re going to end up with major wars in the Middle East,” he continued. “And maybe a third world war. You are closer to a third world war right now than at any time since the Second World War. We’ve never been so close because we have incompetent people running the country.”

Trump has leveled similar accusations at Biden and Harris since the Ukraine conflict began in 2022. The former president has claimed that the conflict never would have started if he were in power, and promised to bring Moscow and Kiev to the negotiating table “in 24 hours” if elected in November.

Netanyahu met with Trump at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, a day after meeting both Biden and Harris in Washington. Speaking to reporters after her face-to-face with the Israeli prime minister, Harris said that she “expressed with the prime minister my serious concern about the scale of human suffering in Gaza, including the death of far too many innocent civilians.”

Harris’ comments reportedly angered Netanyahu, with an aide to the Israeli leader telling Axios that the vice president was far less critical during the meeting.

Trump was a staunch ally of Netanyahu during his time in the White House, imposing sanctions on Iran at Netanyahu’s request, moving the US Embassy in Israel to West Jerusalem, and brokering the Abraham Accords, which saw Israel normalize relations with Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Sudan.

However, this relationship soured after Netanyahu congratulated Biden on his electoral victory over Trump in 2020. “I haven’t spoken to [Netanyahu] since,” Trump told Israeli journalist Barak Ravid later that year. “F**k him.”

Before Trump and Netanyahu embraced on the steps of Mar-a-Lago on Friday, Trump told Fox News that Israel must end its war in Gaza “fast,” as “they are getting decimated with this publicity, and you know Israel is not very good at public relations.”

Earlier this week, the former president took to his Truth Social platform to share a letter he received from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who wished Trump “strength and safety” after the attempt on his life earlier this month. “Thank you. Everything will be good,” Trump replied to Abbas. Trump’s sharing of the letter was seen by some pundits as a move to gain leverage over Netanyahu.
