Breaking: Romania BANS Călin Georgescu From Presidential Election — Protests Erupt in Streets
"This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!" Georgescu declares.
Romania has banned presidential frontrunner Călin Georgescu from running in the second round of the country’s election.
The country’s electoral bureau said Sunday it was invalidating Georgescu’s candidacy over claims he violated laws against extremism.
Georgescu reacted on X Sunday claiming that Europe had become a “dictatorship.”
“A direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide! I have one message left! If democracy in Romania falls, the entire democratic world will fall! This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!” he wrote.
Romania deployed its armed police to respond to thousands of Romanians taking to the streets in protest of the government’s decision to ban Georgescu from running.
The second round of elections have been scheduled for May 8 and 22.
According to reports, Romania’s Head of Intelligence Service (SRI) handed down the order to the electoral bureau to ban Georgescu from running for president in Romania.
Romanian MP George Simion decried the ban of Georgescu from running for office as an “ongoing coup.”
Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Salvini likewise called the move a “Soviet-style Euro-coup” and a “very serious theft of democracy.”
Călin Georgescu’s candidacy rejected in Romania. A Soviet-style Euro-coup. First they annul – with the polls open – the elections he was winning, then they arrest him, then they even exclude him from the elections for fear that he will win. Rather than “rearm Europe”, here we must refound it to defend Democracy. The League is close to the many Romanian citizens who, in their homeland and in Italy, are robbed of their right to vote by a very serious theft of democracy.
Romania’s constitutional court annulled the first round of its presidential election after Georgescu won in December 2024, alleging Russian interference in the election in his favor.
Georgescu was then arrested last month while on his way to submit his candidacy, and just hours after appearing on The Alex Jones Show to detail the left’s push to keep him off the ballot.
Notably, EU leaders in recent weeks have openly bragged about their involvement in getting the Romanian court to annul the first round of Romania’s election after Georgescu won.
Austrian MEP Helmut Brandstätter last month boasted that Georgescu’s arrest was carried out under the direction of the EU.
“Other countries will follow. We have a commission in the European Parliament for ‘Democracy Shield.’ And we take that very seriously,” Brandstätter replied in response to an X user hailing “legal consequences” for Georgescu “ripping apart democracy.”
And former French European Commissioner Thierry Breton in January essentially openly confessed that the West stole the Romanian election and would be ready to do it again in the German elections they deemed it necessary.
Vice President J.D. Vance during his speech at the Munich Security Conference last month blasted the EU leadership for “retreating” on “fundamental values” shared with the U.S., citing the annulled Romanian election as an example.
“What I worry about is the threat from within – the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the United States of America,” Vance said. “Now, I was struck that a former European commissioner went on television recently and sounded delighted that the Romanian government had just annulled an entire election. He warned that if things don’t go to plan, the very same thing could happen in Germany too.”
