The Italian government has confirmed in a statement that seven of its citizens, and many others across Europe, were targeted by Israeli spyware company Paragon Solutions.

The zero-click attack campaign used a malicious PDF file to infect users' devices through the WhatsApp messenger. The Italian ruling party, Fratelli d’Italia, has denied any involvement with the campaign.

Fanpage.it, whose director was targeted as part of the campaign, confirmed Paragon had terminated its contract with the Italian government for failing to comply with the “ethical framework” laid out in the agreement.

Paragon targets EU citizens

WhatsApp and its law firm Advant told the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency that seven Italian WhatsApp users were the targets of Paragon, but their identities could not be revealed because of privacy concerns.

Outside of Italy, citizens of Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden were also targeted in the campaign based on country phone codes.

The victims were mainly journalists and other members of civil society, WhatsApp confirmed last week after accusing Paragon of the spyware campaign and issuing a cease and desist letter.

Paragon also stated earlier this week that the US and “allies” were customers of the company, and said that the company has a “zero-tolerance policy” for the “illicit targeting of journalist and other civil society figures,” with Paragon further stating that it would “terminate our relationship with any customer” found in violation of this rule.

The Italian government also stated that as WhatsApp Ireland Limited is the European operator for Meta, only European Union members have been included in the list of countries, potentially indicating that countries outside of Europe were also targeted in the campaign.

Argentina withdraws from WHO

President Javier Milei has accused the global health agency of mismanaging the Covid-19 pandemic

Argentina has announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing fundamental policy disagreements, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. The move mirrors a decision made last month by US President Donald Trump. 

In a statement on X on Wednesday, President Javier Milei’s office declared that the WHO, which was created to coordinate responses to global health emergencies, had “failed its biggest test” during the coronavirus outbreak. 

It further claimed that the prolonged quarantines led to “one of the greatest economic catastrophes in world history.” In Argentina, the months-long lockdowns under the previous government – endorsed by the WHO – crippled the economy and resulted in 130,000 deaths, the presidential office argued.

Milei’s spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, told journalists that Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein had been instructed to initiate Argentina’s withdrawal.

“We Argentinians will not allow an international organization to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health,” Adorni stated.

The country does not receive WHO funding, so its withdrawal will not affect national healthcare services, Adorni assured.

The newspaper El Pais reported on Wednesday that the exit aligns with Milei’s long-standing opposition to lockdowns. In 2020, he actively protested against the isolation measures imposed by then-President Alberto Fernandez. At the time, he described the lockdown as “a crime against humanity” that violated personal freedoms.

Trump similarly claimed the WHO had mishandled the pandemic and other international health crises, and had imposed “unfairly burdensome” financial obligations on the US.

On his first day in office, he signed an executive order to initiate the process of withdrawing from the organization, declaring that the US would leave it within 12 months.

The move marked the second time Trump has ordered his country’s withdrawal from the WHO. He took steps to exit the organization in 2020, accusing it of assisting China in efforts to “mislead the world” about the origins of Covid-19. His successor, Joe Biden, then reversed the decision on his inauguration day.

The WHO responded to Washington’s decision by expressing “regret” and emphasizing its critical role in global health and security.

The US has historically been one of the WHO’s largest donors, contributing nearly $950 million in 2024, or 15% of the agency’s total budget.

The self-described anarcho-capitalist Milei was the first foreign leader to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate after the Republican’s 2024 US election victory.

Nuovo incarico per il generale Francesco Paolo Figliuolo. La premier Meloni lo ha nominato, o meglio, "promosso" vicedirettore dell'Aise, i servizi segreti per l'estero. Palazzo Chigi ha fatto sapere che l'incarico dura due anni e che è stato reso noto al Comitato parlamentare per la sicurezza della Repubblica.

Il generale Francesco Paolo Figliuolo è stato nominato "vice direttore dell'Agenzia informazioni e sicurezza esterne". Figliuolo è stato commissario straordinario per l'emergenza Covid e poi Commissario straordinario di Governo alla ricostruzione nei territori colpiti dall'alluvione verificatasi in Emilia Romagna, Toscana e Marche. Il generale è stato nominato lo scorso luglio 2023 commissario alla ricostruzione. Un incarico che ha tenuto per quasi un anno e mezzo.

Per il Ministro della Difesa Guido Crosetto si tratta di un "giusto riconoscimento": "La nomina del generale di corpo d'armata Francesco Paolo Figliuolo quale vice direttore dell'Aise è il giusto riconoscimento dell'impegno e della dedizione con cui ha servito il Paese nel corso della sua carriera. Le istituzioni sanno riconoscere il valore dei propri servitori. Auguri di buon lavoro!". 

Crosetto che aveva salutato così l'addio di Figliuolo alla guida del Comando Operativo di Vertice Interforze: "Ringrazio il Generale Figliuolo per l’impegno e la dedizione con cui ha servito il Paese nel corso della sua lunga e prestigiosa carriera. Ricordo in particolare che, quale Commissario Straordinario per il COVID-19, è stato chiamato a gestire un momento estremamente difficile per il nostro Paese, dando lustro e onore alle Forze Armate e alla Difesa. Oggi lascia la guida del Comando Operativo di Vertice Interforze e si appresta ad un nuovo incarico al servizio dello Stato nel quale, sono certo, saprà far bene. Le Istituzioni sanno riconoscere il valore di chi ha ben servito il Paese. A lui il mio grazie per ciò che ha fatto e per quanto farà".
 

LA FORNERO NON E' ITALIANA: SE NE VADI, PREGO.

 

Fornero: ‘italiani poveri, inadeguati e con minori competenze cognitive’

Forse era dai tempi di “choosy”, dei ragazzi svogliati che non volevano lavorare che non si registrava sul sismografo della puzza sotto il naso un picco di queste dimensioni

La professoressa Fornero, ex ministro e donna di scienza e di studio, ci perdonerà lo sfogo figlio di ciò che abbiamo letto questa mattina sulla colonne della Stampa. Famola breve: basandosi sugli ultimi dati Ocse, la professoressa Fornero dipinge l’Italia con un “Paese che arretrando in balia di social e populismi“. Insomma siamo na massa di ignoranti che non hanno la minima percezione del futuro e come ebeti, questo lo diciamo noi estremizzando il Fornero-pensiero, stiamo davanti a smartphone, tablet e diavolerie tecnologiche che ci rincoglioniscono al punto di essere in balia del populismo. Termine ormai abusato che va bene per tutto: per definire le politiche di destra, per definire un pensiero di pancia, per definire una discussione da bar.

Sta di fatto che per la Fornero siamo sprofondati in una “povertà conoscitiva che aumenta insieme a quella economica, civile e culturale. Il modo italiano di “imparare facendo” non basta più a compensare la fragilità educativa”, è la lezioncina su cui prendere appunti. Leggere per credere: “Non è certo difficile rendersi conto del legame tra la povertà conoscitiva e quella economica: nel complesso, siamo diventati non soltanto più poveri ma anche più “fragili”, sia intellettualmente, sia finanziariamente, con la stazionarietà delle retribuzioni mentre i prezzi aumentano.

Rispetto alla media dei Paesi Ocse, abbiamo minori “competenze cognitive”, ossia ci fa difetto la comprensione anche di piccoli problemi, la capacità di vederne le interconnessioni, di utilizzare ragionamenti e strumenti logico-deduttivi e, talvolta, anche semplici calcoli matematici per cercarne una soluzione”. Insomma non veniamo definiti “cretini” solo per residuo bon ton nella scrittura dell’ex ministro che scoppiò a piangere dopo aver di fatto stravolto il sistema previdenziale su cui si regge questo Paese.

Ma non siamo solo “poveri” e con inferiori “competenze cognitive”. No, siamo pure “inadeguati”: “Una generale coltre di inadeguatezza sembra avvolgere il Paese, impedendogli di crescere, economicamente e civilmente, e spingendolo a cercare nei salvatori della patria e nei populisti il rimedio a problemi dei quali ignoriamo la complessità, consolandoci con l’individuazione di un (sempre troppo facile) colpevole (l’Europa è un target ricorrente). Un’inadeguatezza che deriva, anzitutto, dall’insufficienza del sistema educativo nel generare e trasmettere valori e competenze e nel favorire una visione basata, sia pure con la necessaria semplificazione, su conoscenze scientifiche acquisite e condivise”, scrive la Fornero.

Proprio sul finire di questo processo agli italiani c’è un sussulto: “Si può certo obiettare che queste graduatorie sono sempre costruite con metodologie discutibili e che, per esempio, l’indagine Ocse non misura la creatività, dove forse gli italiani si situano verosimilmente sopra la media”. Peccato che per ben cento righe la Fornero abbia dimenticato quel genio italiano che dal dopo-guerra ad oggi ha fatto crescere questo Paese, lo ha fatto progredire, lo ha posizionato costantemente nel progresso, sì capitalista (è un vanto) dell’Occidente.

E forse Elsa Fornero farebbe bene a guardare anche i dati Ocse sull’occupazione che proprio oggi fanno registrare un record per l’Italia: la disoccupazione è al 4,9 per cento. Non accadeva dal 1983. Allora questi italiani che sono così lenti sul piano cognitivo e inadeguati a quanto pare hanno ancora voglia di sbattersi, di dimenarsi e di lavorare. L’unica cosa che conta. E il lavoro nasce inevitabilmente dalla cultura, dalla preparazione e dallo studio. Con buona pace di chi vuol darci da una vita lezioni. Non solo dalla cattedra di un’università.

EU AI Act Effectively Legalizes Biometric Mass Surveillance

On February 2, the EU AI Act, which came into force in August, reached the first compliance deadline. These are provisions that contain rules that allow the bloc to legalize biometric mass surveillance.

This is happening via Article 5, that on the face of it seeks to introduce protections against using AI systems that represent “unacceptable risk.” But, there are also exceptions to this, defined in the act as the “strictly necessary” cases when those same systems are allowed to be used.

It is this that gave rise to the fear that one of the consequences of the AI Act is to in fact legalize some highly contentious deployments of biometric data-fueled mass surveillance.

Article 5 prohibits real-time remote biometric ID systems from being used by law enforcement in public spaces – but only “unless and in so far as such use is strictly necessary.”

The “strictly necessary” instances are described as those when law enforcement is searching for “specific victims” of crimes like abduction, trafficking, and sexual exploitation, but also when they look for missing persons.

The second definition gets less precise in scope as it allows for AI surveillance systems to be used to prevent crime. This includes a threat to life or physical safety of individuals that is deemed to be “specific, substantial, and imminent” – or threat of a terrorist attack that law enforcement decides is “genuine and present” but also – “genuine and foreseeable.”

Lastly, the AI Act treats as “strictly necessary” to exempt from prohibited AI activities the following: “Localization or identification of a person suspected of having committed a criminal offense, for the purpose of conducting a criminal investigation or prosecution or executing a criminal penalty for offenses.”

These are referred to in Annex II and are punishable in EU member countries for a maximum period of at least four years.

In other words, quite a lot of “strictly necessary” scenarios and interpretations that allow for mass biometric surveillance can be derived from the rules.

To facilitate enforcing the act, the EU came up with its “AI Pact” – another of the bloc’s “voluntary pledges” signed by over 100 companies, Amazon, Google, and OpenAI among them – but not Meta and Apple.

Some observers note that companies critical of the law expect clarity regarding standards and guidelines.
