No, non è pura fantasia.

The WEF’s chairman is still alive and well, despite claims online

CLAIM: World Economic Forum executive chairman Klaus Schwab was recently admitted to the hospital in serious condition and might have died.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. Posts making these allegations began spreading widely after a website that says it publishes “satire, and comedic opinion pieces and editorials” posted an article about Schwab’s supposed hospitalization. A WEF spokesperson told The Associated Press that the claims are untrue.

THE FACTS: Social media users are spreading baseless rumors about Schwab’s health.

“BREAKING: Klaus Schwab was apparently admitted to the hospital seriously ill,” reads one X post that had received approximately 25,000 likes and 8,800 shares as of Monday. “Anyway, that doesn’t BUG me.”

The word “bug” appears to be emphasized in reference to another false claim, that the WEF wants to replace meat with bugs.

Other posts go a step further, stating that Schwab “may be dead.”

But the WEF founder is not deathly ill or worse, according to Yann Zopf, a spokesperson for the organization.

“These claims are entirely baseless and unfounded,” he wrote in an email to the AP. “Professor Schwab’s health is excellent. Like many high-profile individuals and organizations, he and the World Economic Forum have been targeted by conspiracy narratives, as well as misinformation and disinformation campaigns.”

The recent allegations began spreading widely after a website called the Weekly Crier on Sunday published an article titled, “World Economic Forum Founder Klaus Schwab Hospitalized.” Weekly Crier says on its About Us page that in addition to “reliable and unbiased news and information,” it posts “satire, and comedic opinion pieces and editorials.”

The article on Schwab does not cite any sources, saying only that he was “reportedly admitted to the hospital late last night” and that other details “have not been officially disclosed.” It adds that “the WEF community, meanwhile, has been relatively quiet on the matter.”

Weekly Crier did not respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine at ‘serious risk’ of collapse, ex-British general warns

Ukraine at ‘serious risk’ of collapse, ex-British general warns

Retired UK general Sir Richard Barrons has told the BBC that there is “a serious risk” of Ukraine losing the conflict with Russia this year. With ammunition and manpower running low, Barrons warned that Ukrainian forces may be unable to hold back a major Russian offensive this summer.

“We are seeing Russia batter away at the front line, employing a five-to-one advantage in artillery, ammunition, and a surplus of people reinforced by the use of newish weapons,” Barrons told the British broadcaster.

“At some point this summer,” he continued, “we expect to see a major Russian offensive, with the intent of doing more than smash forward with small gains to perhaps try and break through the Ukrainian lines. And if that happens we would run the risk of Russian forces breaking through and then exploiting into areas of Ukraine where the Ukrainian armed forces cannot stop them.”

Barrons served at the head of the UK’s Joint Forces Command from 2013 until his retirement in 2016. Unlike some former Western military chiefs who still claim that Ukraine can defeat Russia on the battlefield, Barrons has warned since last year that the conflict is unwinnable, and could potentially drag on for decades.

Since Ukraine’s much-vaunted summer counteroffensive petered out last October, Western analysts and officials have warned that shortages of troops and ammunition could lead to a sudden collapse of the Ukrainian front.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukraine lost 160,000 men during its counteroffensive, out of a total of 444,000 casualties between February 2022 and March 2024. The Ukrainian government has resorted to increasingly draconian conscription measures to replenish these losses, but Barrons warned that desertion and draft-dodging will likely increase as Kiev’s chances of success dwindle.

“Ukraine may come to feel it can’t win,” he said. “And when it gets to that point, why will people want to fight and die any longer, just to defend the indefensible?”

Ukrainian officials have tied their country’s survival to the continued influx of Western cash and weapons. Speaking to CNN last week, President Vladimir Zelensky said that “Ukraine will lose the war” if the US Congress fails to pass a $95 billion foreign aid bill including $60 billion in military assistance for Kiev. In an interview with Politico several weeks earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba claimed that Kiev needs more US-made Patriot air defense systems to hold the line against Russian forces.

However, the aid bill has been stalled by Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill. In a New York Times op-ed published on Friday, Ohio Senator JD Vance, who voted against the bill, wrote that $60 billion “is a fraction of what it would take to turn the tide in Ukraine’s favor.”

Furthermore, Vance argued that the US and its allies only have the industrial capacity to produce a third of the Patriot systems requested by Ukraine, and a tenth of the artillery shells.

Despite these harsh realities, Zelensky said this week that he has “a plan” for another counteroffensive, but needs “certain technologies” from the West before this operation can be launched.

German leader sets conditions for talks with Putin

Moscow should first “abandon” its military campaign for negotiations to be possible, Olaf Scholz has said
German leader sets conditions for talks with Putin

Negotiations between Germany and Russia are possible but only after Moscow gives up on its goals in the Ukraine conflict, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Saturday. The German leader told the newspaper TAZ that he would only talk with President Vladimir Putin if Russia “abandoned” its campaign.

When Russia started its military operation against Kiev in February 2022, it cited the need to protect the people of Donbass, eradicate Nazi ideology in Ukraine, and prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.

On Saturday, Scholz reiterated his pledge to “support Ukraine for as long as it is necessary.” When asked about when he thinks the conflict could end, the chancellor replied that “nobody can answer this question.”

When further pressed on whether the West should “push harder for negotiations and compromise,” the chancellor hit back by saying that “Russia must not win this war.” Asked by TAZ when the last time he talked to Putin was, Scholz said it was in December 2022.

The interviewer noted that “many people, particularly in eastern Germany” would like to see an agreement with Russia and asked why Scholz had not tried talking to the Russian president since late 2022.

“Such conversations are useful when you feel like you can make a difference,” Scholz replied, adding that he would do so “when the time comes.” When asked to provide more details about a potential time frame for negotiations, the chancellor said that any talks could take place only after “Russia realizes that there will be no dictated peace” and “Putin understands that he has to abandon his campaign and withdraw troops.”

In March, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the newspaper Argumenti i Fakty that Moscow has new regions that need to be protected against encroachments by Kiev and that it cannot allow a state on its borders that has a stated aim of seizing Crimea and the new territories, he said, referring to the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

Moscow has never stated that it planned to seize all of Ukraine but has explained that it sought to ensure that the Ukrainian military could not pose a threat to Russian citizens or territory. Russian officials have also repeatedly expressed a willingness to engage in peace talks at any time as long as the reality on the ground was taken into account.

Kiev has repeatedly insisted that it would only consider any peace talks with Moscow after Russia withdraws its troops from all territories that Ukraine claims as its own. The Kremlin has brushed those demands off as absurd.

On Saturday, Scholz also said that many Germans were afraid of a potential escalation and called such fears “understandable.” But Berlin still would not abandon its support for Kiev, he said, adding that Germany “cannot accept” Russia prevailing on the battlefield.
