Saudi minister says Khashoggi murder was unauthorised error

Di Maio met with Al Jubeir, calls for removing causes of conflic

(ANSAmed) - ROME, DECEMBER 6 - The killing of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey in October 2018 "was a mistake, an unauthorised operation", said Saudi Foreign Affairs Minister Adel al-Jubeir, speaking at the Med Dialogues conference on Friday.

"The Saudi state never kills its citizens; there are people in court and we have adopted mechanisms to avoid this from happening in the future," he said.

In a bilateral meeting with al-Jubeir on the sidelines of Med Dialogues, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio highlighted the importance of how "necessary it is to work together to remove the causes of the current conflicts in the Gulf for lasting stability in the region".

During the meeting, focus was also placed on the "opportunities offered to Italy by the programme Vision2030", the socio-economic development plan launched in Saudi Arabia.
